The Wine Collective was formed as a community of vineyards, wineries, farmers and vintners who work under the direction and vision of our Director of Winemaking, John Levenberg, to make truly exceptional wines.
An award-winning winemaker, John Levenberg studied Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis. He spent nine years working at a number of wineries in California, France, and New Zealand.
He is responsible for the first L’Absolut de Quinault (Bordeaux, France), rated by Wine Spectator as one of the three best wines in Bordeaux for the 2002 vintage. As former winemaker at Paul Hobbs Winery in California, John produced 23 wines rated 90+ points by Robert Parker, including a 100-point wine.
John is the scientist and the creative force behind the wines of The Wine Collective.
We have a deeply traditional and slightly punk approach to winemaking, a sort of rooted modernist vision of our craft.
On the one hand, we spend long hours working with hammers and chisels in the service of barrique intégrale (barrel fermentations), and on the other hand, we have state-of-the-art equipment with the latest technology that is on par with the best wineries in the world.
We make wines in an Old-World style that strives for nuance and balance, and yet we also do our fair share of stylistic experimentation.
We collaborate with farmers the way communities did in pre-industrialized Europe, but we do this in a warehouse in Baltimore City.
We strive to disclose the unique terroir that is concealed in each cluster, and we have a garagiste vision that focuses on the craft of winemaking.
Ultimately, our conviction is that this approach yields something better, something that cannot quite be done anywhere else or in any other way, wines that have the perfect drinkability of the Old World with some of the creativity and irreverence of the new. But most importantly, we make wine together and enjoy it together.
Our collective includes several member wineries and vineyards, vintners and farmers who work tirelessly to grow and vinify grapes of the highest quality.
